Gabby in the yard

Welcome back wee Gabby
We have taken in our former foster Gabby who unfortunately needed a new home when her owner went into palliative care. We are very sorry this has happened to the loving home she had, but welcome back here. Gabby arrived November 2 on Critter Cab transport and we picked her up with her possessions. Gabby is a very sweet 15 year old Maltese who has arthitis and has a very stiff legged walk- she has pain meds to help with this. She arrived with stomach upsets due to her stressful last few weeks, but that cleared up quickly with pills and Fortiflora on her kibble. She does not eat much and seems to be more of a grazer. This will not work here as our dog Zoey is a vaccumm and will eat any left down... she has twice finished Gabby's meal before I could remove it. Gabby sleeps on my bed along with Zoey and she is very good through the night. We have gone on a few walks and she does well. Gabby is both pee pad trained and outdoor, which will be nice in bad weather as she is thin and feels the wet and cold.
This will be Gabby's last move as she will have a place here as long as she needs.

Chelsea is leaving us tomorrow!
We are sure going to miss this sweet girl. Since she came to us, she has had tummy issues. She hesitates to eat some meals and her stool has been looser than normal. We have tried changing her kibble, fasting then feeding rice/chicken mix with no change. We tried to get the vet to prescribe a prescription food for gut health, but they had closed the account and can't sell us the kibble without an account. After two weeks of trying to get this figured out the rescue has decided to move Chelsea to a new foster home in a large city where Loyal has an active account. No vets in our area were taking on new clients so I am not sure that we will be able to keep fostering.
Chelsea is less timid, has started to walk in our front yard on a leash and will not instigate play with our dog and takes toys out of the basket to chew and play with. She is slowly learning how to live in a home and once she is feel better I am sure she will blossom. She is a very sweet girl and deserves to find the best forever home. Good luck wee girl!

Meet Chelsea!
Chelsea is a sweet mini poodle who has been with us for 2 weeks. She is still quite timid, but is learning to trust us. She comes to an outstretched hand and will now let me pick her up instead of running away. She loves to be near our dog and feels more comfortable with another dog around. Chelsea is still learning what it is like to live in a home and we are working on house training and walking on a leash. These are new things for her and she is still getting used to them.
Stay tuned for updates on this sweet girl. She should be ready to post for adoption in the next week or two.

Laya has been moved to a new foster home!
Unfortunately Laya was just too energetic and rough with our small yorkie. She is a lovely girl who will need a firm hand in her forever home. Laya is very cuddly and wants lots of attention and knows how to get it. It won't be long until she finds her new home. All the best Laya!

Laya has arrived!
Laya arrived today and is almost ready to look for her new family. She is almost 2 years old, a maltese/Lhasa Apso mix and about 12.5 pounds. She is settling in with us nicely. She was spayed earlier this week and is up to date on her vaccinations. More to come soon as we get to know her better.

Adeline & River have been adopted.
Adeline (now Poppy) and River (now Maisie) met their new family on Saturday and won them over. They now live in their new home with 4 doting adults to help them finish their transition from neglect in a puppy mill to life in a loving home. It won't be long until their past is behind them and they are enjoying life as "normal" dogs. We couldn't be happier for this bonded pair.

Almost 4 weeks of freedom!
Adeline likes to cuddle in the big dog bed and keeps more to herself. They are both more adverturous if we are not in the room with them but they will both sit with us for pets either together or separately and seem to enjoy it.
House training is coming along slowly as we get a routine in place. They continue to sleep together in the crate at night and now run into the crate at bedtime to wait for their night time treat, and they are eager to come out of the crate in the morning. They are doing well.

Third week with Adeline & River
These pups are doing well. They are still timid, but are doing well when in foreign situations. River seems to be the more adventurous and will come out onto the deck on her own before Adeline will. Both dogs would rather be inside than outside and will try to get back in when taken down to the patio/lawn. We are blocking off the stairs and encouraging them to do their "business" outside. They are just starting to do this and are rewarded with a small treat and brought back inside immediately.
Addie allows us to pick her up, but River will avoid it until she is backed into a corner. They are both fine once in our arms. They continue to sleep together in a crate, but we now close the crate during the day so they don't hide out there. We have slowly moved the dog beds away from the crate and they are now comfortable in a big dog bed in front of the patio doors, where they can sleep or play.
Addie is starting to walk on a leash, but still stops a lot or wanders back and forth. River does not want to move while on a leash out front, she does better in the fenced yard.
They are slowly getting more comfortable with people and both seem to enjoy being petted.

Adeline and River have been here for 1 week!
These two are very timid, but trying so hard to be brave. They will both usually come to an out stretched hand especially if there is a good treat in it. They LOVE cheese!
They have graduated to sleeping in the larger crate overnight with the door closed. The pen has been put away and we are closing the crate door for periods during the day and they now will cuddle in a dog bed in front of the crate between bouts of cautiously exploring their surroundings.
They slept in the closed crate together last night and were clean overnight. Also for the first night River did not bark. House training is slow going and they will both move around outside in the backyard with leash and harness on. Adeline will walk a bit while we hold the leash. They are coming along, but it will take time for them to trust us and their environment.
We gave them a bath today and they smell much better... all the bedding was washed up and they are feeling pretty today!

River is settling in well.
The new fosters arrived yesterday morning and they are both settling in well. Adeline is more secure than River. They both shake at times and they are easily startled. We set up an area for them with 2 crates surrounded by a good sized area where they can feel more secure. For the first day neither one would go into the crates to nap on the soft bedding, but rather lay on the bare floor. I did try a dog bed in the crate and Adeline got her front feet in while trying to play with Zoey, but they seem to prefer the floor.
We have been outside a few times and River is not ready yet to explore and just sits down until we go in. Adeline has moved around the yard checking things out. We are working on the 3 steps up to the deck with her and she came down the dog strairs to get off the couch today. Baby steps, but they are both doing well.
We are trying to determine if they are bonded. They apparently were from the same litter, but we don't know how much contact they have had during their breeding years. If they appear to be bonded they will be adopted together, if not they can go to separate homes.
Both dogs seem to have a sweet personality so far!

River arrives October 1
River is an eleven pound yorkie mill dog who is arriving Oct 1. She is supposed to be bonded with Adeline a 9 pound yorkie. They are sisters from the same litter, so they will come together to see if they are indeed bonded. River you will soon be in a home without a cage and will learn to be a "normal" dog! Unfortunately the picture of river is very blurry, so we will wait until Sunday to see her.

Lotti has been adopted!
Lotti went to her new home last Sunday. She has 5 humans to dote on her and a small dog to play with.
Life is looking good for Lotti. Gone are the days of living in a cage and producing litter after litter of puppyies to line the pockets of unscrupulous breeders. Lotti will only know love and kindness from now on. I wish every dog was this lucky.
Good luck Lotti and her new family!

Update on Lotti
Lotti is doing well. She has started to walk around the block at a much more normal pace and although some new things still bother her, she is stopping less often. We have now extended the walks to include going to the park's walking paths. Lotti participated in an adoption event last Sunday and was timid but tolerated it fine. She was held by people who came to meet her and walked around the store with strangers. Baby steps are paying off.

Lotti is walking around the block!
Over the last 3 weeks Lotti has learned to walk on a leash. At first all she would do is stand and look all around her. She was overwhelmed by all the open space and new sights and sounds of the neighbourhood. Although she was quite comfortable going out in the fenced backyard wandering around and exploring things, the front street was an entirely different situation. After several times just standing out front she finally took a few steps. We went our 2-3 times each day and after about 8 days we made it to the end of the driveway! We let her dictate where we went and how fast... believe me a snail could keep pace! Once she found a route she did not want to vary from it at first. After 3 weeks we can now walked about 1/2 km around the block and we are now able to dictate where we will go, but Lotti still decides on how fast we will go. It won't be long until she is a pro!!
